The Smith & Wesson Model 39-2 is a classic, 9mm semi-automatic pistol made from 1971 to 1983. It features a lightweight aluminum alloy frame, a 4-inch barrel, and holds 8 rounds in its magazine. It is highly prized by collectors for its slim, all-metal design and historical significance. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]

History

The Model 39 was born in the 1950s after the U.S. military asked for a new 9mm handgun. The 39-2 version updated the original design with a shorter extractor and a new feed ramp so it could shoot many different types of ammo without jamming. It became famous because the Illinois State Police used it, and the Navy SEALs used a special suppressed version during the Vietnam War. [1, 2, 3]

Value & Upkeep

Used 39-2 pistols typically sell for around $450 to $600, depending on their condition and the original box. If you own one, it is smart to buy a new recoil spring if you do not know how many rounds have been fired through it. It is also a good idea to clean it often and wipe down the metal with a light coat of gun oil to stop rust.
